Our History
The ‘Nilgiris’ means Blue Mountains (in Tamil ‘Nil’ means Blue, ‘Giri’ means Mountain). The Blue Mountain was turned Green Mountain with large scale plantation of cash crops in the hills to get revenue from tea and coffee.
The Nilgiris district, being the home of the largest plantations in the south attracted nearly half a million of the displaced repatriates into the district. The migration of the displaced repatriate population from the plains to the hills started after 1970 peaking in 1974. The Government of Tamil Nadu opened 3000 hectares of virgin forest land as rehabilitation Tea – Plantations in which only 2000 repatriate families were rehabilitated. The life of other thousands of families was at stake.
At this juncture, Island Trust set its foot in Nilgiris to guide, unite and rebuild the lives of the displaced repatriate Community. After two decades of its dedicated service to the up rooted repatriate community to take deep roots in a safe and secured environment in the Nilgiris, the organization has chosen to uplift yet another disadvantaged community called ‘The tribal’.
